Naturopathic Treatment Of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is condition that causes recurrent attacks of intense nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and sometimes headaches or migraines. Attacks can last from a few hours to several days at a time. The condition is more prevalent among children, and seems to occur less frequently in adults. Many children will grow out of the condition once they reach adulthood. CVS is debilitating, and can be dangerous if dehydration occurs.

A person suffering from cyclic vomiting syndrome typically has pale skin, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, but some patients will also experience diarrhoea, headaches, migraines and light sensitivity. usually by the time it is diagnosed they have had digestive disorders laboratory tests, seen a gastroenterologist and ruled out other causes of the excessive vomiting and nausea.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is a challenging condition to live with and a potentially complex condition to treat. Naturopathy offers the opportunity to manage the symptoms, treat potential underlying causes holistically, and reduce the need for medication which may have detrimental side effects with long-term use. This usually works well to prevent vomiting episodes and lessen symptoms that can significantly impact quality of life.

What are symptoms of cyclic vomiting syndrome generally?

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is diagnosed when there are repeated episodes of severe nausea and vomiting.

This is what it can look like for the patient...

  1. Prodrome phase: You begin to feel sweaty and nauseous minutes or sometimes hours leading up to the cyclic vomiting episode. This commonly starts in the early hours of the morning.

  2. Vomiting phase: Vomiting occurs, up to several times an hour. Children experiencing CVS may projectile vomit. The experience is often intense and a severe vomiting episode can happen alongside severe headaches for some patients.

  3. Recovery phase: In recovery, the vomiting and nausea gradually improves.

  4. Well phase: Once the vomiting syndrome episode is over you return to feeling like yourself again.

Our natural treatment process for Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS)

Cyclic vomiting syndrome natural treatment involves a comprehensive look at why the nausea and severe vomiting episodes occur. While patients may have had multiple tests before they see our Brisbane naturopaths, they often haven't done enough to assess the whole picture. The first step is to look at your liver function and how this impacts the vomiting syndrome. We also look at the health of your microbiome but doing a microbiome stool test - this helps us understand the landscape of your gut health and if this is playing a part in the CVS.

Some of the risk factors include emotional stress, trigger foods, digestive system issues, a positive family history and lack of adequate sleep.

Why choose Shift for Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome treatment in Brisbane?

Our naturopaths have helped many patients with cyclic vomiting syndrome where conventional doctors have been unable to help. All of our naturopaths have experience and success in treating cyclic vomiting syndrome both in adults and children. This is a condition that is well suited to naturopathic care so if you have confirmed cyclic vomiting syndrome then please reach out for support.

If there is a major emotional stress aspect our team can also address this side of things for you. The aim is to prevent episodes and to work on anything significant in your medical history that is contributing to you cyclic vomiting syndrome.

At your Discovery and Diagnosis our naturopaths will look at your health history and any tests you have previously had done. We will ask questions about digestion, stress, sleep and history of infections and other disease that could have contributed to the cyclic vomiting syndrome developing. Once we have the landscape of what is going on for you, we will do a diagnostic and show you what areas of your health we need to work on.

We then will prescribe herbal medicine and other nutritional supplements based on what you individually need. Of course, the food you eat will come into this conversation and we will work to eliminate anything that could stop vomiting from healing and ensure the dietary balance is right.

Your treatment plan is going to be individualised to suit what you need. For some people we need to reduce stress as a priority. For others we need to reduce inflammation in the gut. if neuromuscular disease is an issue or panic attacks, then they will be addressed.

Most people with cyclic vomiting syndrome will benefit from a protocol that heals the gut and liver. Sometimes a normal diet isn’t tolerated by someone with cyclic vomiting syndrome so we may need to modify what you eat. Once vomiting begins it is about getting you through the episode as quickly as possible. We work to prevent episodes wherever we can.

For the cyclic vomiting syndrome patient we need to be in touch regularly to monitor how treatment is going. There is a small chance that certain supplements may trigger symptoms but these issues are usually very quickly overcome. We usually find to begin with the vomiting phase begins to become less intense and we see less severe vomiting occur.

Over time the vomiting may reduce to nausea, then may cease happening all together.

We want to look at your blood tests in an particular tests that show us liver function, nutrition and inflammatory markers. Then we will order a complete microbiome mapping to see if there is any bacterial issues that we need to address. Sometimes parasites can also contribute to cyclic vomiting syndrome and make matter worse.

Once we have these results, we will use them to decide how to best treat you cyclical vomiting syndrome.

Some of the food triggers associated with migraines such as chocolate, cheese and monosodium glutamate, are also considered triggers for CVS.
