Unexplained Abdominal Symptoms

If you suffer from common gastrointestinal issues like stomach pain, bloating, diarrhoea and related symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and skin rashes, you may have a food intolerance. Unlike food allergies, which involve the immune system, food intolerances are adverse reactions often caused by the body’s difficulty digesting specific foods. Common examples include lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance. But you can also be intolerant to other components of food such a fibre or food chemicals. This is why food intolerance testing is so important. If we can get to the root cause, we can eliminate the intolerance and get you feeling great again.

If left untreated, food intolerances can contribute to more serious health problems, including severe digestive issues, autoimmune diseases, and mood disorders.

At The Shift Clinic Brisbane, we take a functional medicine approach to treating food intolerances and digestive health. This means we look beyond symptoms to uncover the root causes. Our naturopathic functional medicine practitioners assess your whole health picture to identify foods that may be causing your sensitivities. Using advanced testing methods, including functional pathology testing, we then develop a personalised treatment plan to help you regain your health and well being.

How does a food intolerance test work?

During your initial consultation with your naturopath, they will ask a range of questions to gain insight into your current state of health, identify key areas to work and, and determine the steps needed to begin shifting your health. If you are experiencing reactions to particular foods or food sensitivities, your naturopath may refer you for a food intolerance test. This may include IgG, IgE, and IgA testing, as well as specific assessments for gluten and sensitivities to dairy products (cow’s milk, egg yolk). You may also receive an initial prescription outlining supplements to take and dietary changes to support your health right away.

The other key test we order when it comes to food intolerances is a gut microbiome mapping test – most food intolerances originate from issues with gut health so this helps us get to the root cause of the issue.

Once your test results are available, your naturopath will review them with you and create a personalised treatment plan based on your unique needs and findings.

Fatigue

How can food intolerances impact long term health?

If left untreated, food intolerances can negatively affect long-term health by causing nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation, and pose risk of developing autoimmune or other chronic health conditions. They can also affect mental health, contributing to depression, and lead to ongoing issues with digestion and energy levels.

Who should get a food intolerance test?

If you suspect you have a food intolerance and experience persistent digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, or stomach pain, or other common symptoms including headaches, migraines, fatigue, or skin reactions, it’s a good idea to book a Discovery & Diagnosis session with one of our naturopaths. Our team will take a holistic look at your current health and refer you for food intolerance testing if necessary.

Food intolerance test FAQs.

There are several different food intolerance tests we may refer you for, including IgG, IgE, and IgA tests. These measure levels of specific antibodies in your blood that may increase in response to certain foods. Elevated antibody levels can indicate a potential sensitivity. These tests are generally done through a simple blood test. These tests differ from a food allergy test, which typically measures immediate immune responses to identify potential allergic reactions.

Food allergies involve the immune system and typically cause immediate, consistent allergic reactions, even with small amounts of the allergen. In contrast, food intolerances do not involve the immune system. They occur when the body struggles to digest or process certain foods, which can lead to common symptoms such as bloating, digestive changes, headaches, fatigue, and skin reactions.

Once your test results are available, your naturopath will review them with you and help identify foods that are contributing to your symptoms. They will discuss your personalised treatment plan to help manage any intolerances, food sensitivities, or related concerns. Your treatment plan may include high-quality, specific herbal medicines, nutritional supplements, and dietary recommendations that may include removing particular foods that are triggering your symptoms. We may also suggest a fibre supplement, beneficial bacteria (probiotics), or digestive enzymes if we believe these will support your digestion and help reduce food intolerance symptoms.

Your health care treatment plan will be made based on your individual needs – no two people are the same! This means that the herbal medicine and natural therapies you receive is targeted to your exact issue, allowing changes to be made much faster. However, most patients report a significant change in at least some of their symptoms within the first two weeks of treatment.

Our naturopaths treat patients with food intolerances every day so we are confident we can get to the bottom of your issues.
