Experience Traditional Chinese Medicine with Acupuncture in Brisbane

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing systems on earth, originating in China thousands of years ago. It works by stimulating your meridians and particular points on the body with fine needles to stimulate your innate healing response and supporting your body to come back into balance. Our Brisbane acupuncturists have years of experience treating patients with acute and chronic illness.

Chinese acupuncture techniques we use for our treatments

Traditional Chinese medicine or TCM is a comprehensive system of medicine that has been used for centuries. Both of our acupuncture Brisbane therapists hold Bachelor of health science degrees in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. This uses applied science and a natural and holistic approach to reduce symptoms and help your body heal from complex conditions.

Our Brisbane acupuncturists will diagnose you using traditional Chinese medicine techniques like pulse and tongue analysis, along with looking at your symptoms and other body signs. They then will use thin needles on specific acupuncture points on the body to work on whatever is going on for you. Acupuncture is excellent for fertility, musculoskeletal issues, emotional stress, anxiety, back and neck problems, low energy, immune system issues and so much more.

It is a holistic approach to healthcare that looks at all parts of your health, rather than treating issues in isolation. Chinese herbal medicine may also be prescribed to complement your session.

What conditions can we help treat with acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been traditionally used for thousands of years to treat hundreds of different ailments. Because acupuncture works holistically on the body, it may be beneficial for a wide range of health issues including:

Our acupuncture treatment process

At your initial appointment your qualified practitioner will take you health history and do some examinations to assist their diagnosis. Their training centres on traditional chinese medicine diagnosis and looks at what is causing you the most discomfort and what else is connected to what is going on.

During your sessions fine needles will be used - they are truly tiny and the aim is for your sessions to be comfortable and relaxing. Massage, cupping and other techniques may be utilised in your sessions. Our holistic approach means we may also prescribe Chinese herbal medicine as part of your treatment plan.

Our patients describe their treatment as relaxing, comprehensive and that they leave with a a sense of balance.

What to expect from your first Acupuncture session at our Brisbane clinic

Your initial appointment is $135 for the first session, and $125 for subsequent appointments. Both of our practitioners are health fund registered and HICAPS is available on site. Initial fertility acupuncture appointments are $149.

We recommend you arrive at least 10 minutes before your treatment so you can grab a cup of tea and soak in our relaxing atmosphere at Shift Brisbane. We will send you your intake and consent forms before your appointment so you can relax on the day.

We have 2 amazing acupuncturists at our Brisbane clinic. Georgie Smith is a fertility and pregnancy specialist acupuncturist. She used to be a midwife so is your go to when it comes to all things preconception, pregnancy and post birth. Jarrah Crabtree takes a holistic approach and his treatments often involve massage, cupping, moxibustion and other traditional Chinese medicine techniques. Jarrah is a generalist and musculoskeletal acupuncturist – helping patients through both acute pain and chronic conditions.

After you first appointment your therapist will recommend a plan of action for ongoing care. Most of our patients will have appointments at our Brisbane clinic every 1-2 weeks in the early stages of treatment. The techniques used will depend on your individual presentation and what your practitioner thinks is best for your recovery.

The first step will be to talk through your case history and to do some examinations. Once your acupuncturist has this data they can give you a diagnosis based on traditional Chinese medicine and then get you on the table for your first treatment. Depending on what is needed, your treatment may be face down on lying on your back. Your comfort and privacy is important to us and we want you to feel comfortable and cosy.

Once the treatment is completed, we will gently remove the needles and then talk about how many treatments you need and how often. The aim is for you to be as clear as possible on what you need to do to get well and our role in helping you to heal.

Education is a big part of what we do at Shift and there are going to be things that you need to do outside of getting on table treatments. We may also recommend that you see other Shift team members as part of your wellness journey.

Jarrah

Jarrah Crabtree

Acupuncturist

Jarrah Crabtree's passion for acupuncture and Chinese medicine began in his youth, as he was always drawn to holistic healing and the natural world. In his late teens and early twenties, he discovered Taoism and its profound philosophy, which emphasizes harmony with the natural flow of life. This ancient wisdom resonated deeply with him and inspired his journey into acupuncture. He found that Chinese medicine, much like Taoism, is rooted in the rhythms of nature, focusing on restoring balance within the body and its connection to the environment

No, it does not hurt. Your acupuncture session should never be painful. Our gentle style of acupuncture helps to give you the most health benefits with no irritation.

Our initial appointments are 60 minutes long and follow up appointments are 60 minutes long. During your initial appointment, your acupuncturist will spend some time talking through your medical history and assessing you before the acupuncture starts.

No, it is important to know that acupuncture and dry needling are two very distinct modalities.

Dry needling is based upon the western medicine paradigm. It is used for soft tissue correction, which involves inserting extremely fine and painless needles into muscle fibres, causing a local twitch response. This, in turn, helps to deactivate and resolve trigger points in the muscle and release constriction. Many health professionals use dry needling as a method for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, including myotherapists, physiotherapists, podiatrists and even some GPs.

Acupuncture, on the other hand, is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and the stimulation of Qi (pronounce Chi). Acupuncture diagnoses using complex theories, meaning only a qualified and registered Acupuncturist or Chinese Medicine practitioner can treat with acupuncture

Yes, acupuncture complements other treatments and therapies quite well. You can have acupuncture alongside your naturopathic care or if you also have massage or physiotherapy. Acupuncture is safe while pregnant, while in recovery and also in conjunction with medications. Be sure to tell your acupuncturist what other treatments you are having so that they can complement them.

Your acupuncturist will take your medical history and find out what medicines you are taking, as well as any other treatments you’re receiving so that it complements what you are already doing. Shift at Brisbane Natural Health is a collaborative practice and we like to work collectively with other health modalities to ensure the best outcome for you.

Yes! Health Fund rebates are available from all of the major health funds. To see if your policy covers acupuncture and to find out how much your rebate will be, contact your health fund. We have a HICAPS machine on site for instantaneous refunds.

You’re welcome to come wearing whatever you like – if we need to get to a part of your body that is covered, then there will be plenty of towels for discretion and comfort.

No, your practitioner will leave the room to allow you to undress and drape yourself with towels comfortably before they return. They will always knock on the door to ensure you are ready to go.
